The
source of the term art is Latin word ars,
which meant "skill." Although this
is the oldest meaning of
art ,
it
is no longer the most common meaning.
For us the realm of these art suggests
creative endeavors and includes an
entire range of activities classified as
cultural. These creative arts are often
subdivided into the broad categories of
the performing arts (such as theatre,
music, and dance) , the literary arts
(poetry, essays, and novels) and the
visual arts. In everyday conversation
,however, most people assume art means
visual art, art that we experience
primarily through our sense of sight.
Saying that someone is an artist usually
suggests that he or she draws , paints ,
sculpts , or designs.
Artists
often say that someone can really "see"
as if most people cannot. What an artist
means by seeing is hard to explain, but
it is something like the totally
involved gaze of newborn child, hungrily
looking at everything as if it had never
been seen before, not blinded by
preconceptions. All of us like to see
new things , but in the midst of a busy
life our seeing becomes stale , our eyes
jaded.
Art can
renew the pleasure of seeing and help us
feel more alive. Many people have had
the exhilarating experience after
looking at artwork of noticing that
world outside looks more interesting and
beautiful.

A
good craftsperson knows what materials
and tools are appropriate to the job
ahead, and this is also true for any
artist. In fact , many of the materials
and tools used by artists are also used
by carpenters and construction workers.
Artist use paper, paint, steel, and
fabric; chisels, hammers, cameras, and
welding torches. Artists materials ,
like oil , paint or clay , are reffered
to as media. Each medium has it own
unique characteristics, demanding the
knowledge of special techniques and
requiring specific tools. The tools and
materials artists can use influence the
creation of an artwork just as much as
historical and social factors. By
learning about them , we will discover
another way to understand art.
Despite
these ravages of time , it is possible
to consider what makes the Mona Liza is
a masterpiece. Whatever the type of art
in question , the first step in learning
to appreciate art is simply learning to
look. This is more challenging than is
usually believed. Often we think of
looking as a passive act , as in
watching TV or clicking through pictures
on a webpage. But studying the visual
arts requires more than empty viewing;
seeing can be active rather than
passive. When primitive people looked at
the world , they had to observe nature
because they were hunters and gatherers;
they depended on their eyes for
survival. In their world everything was
natural and real; very little was made
by the man. We, on the other hand , live
among literally millions of images , not
only in books or on a screen , but also
on almost everything we touch- from
cereal boxes to printed T-shirts. As
opposed to primitive cultures , most of
what we see and interact with is
human-made. This constant bombardment by
printed , video, , and digital images
has made us visually sophisticated, but
can also leave our eyes numb.
Pen and
Ink
Pens have
been in use since ancient times. The
oldest pens were made from tall grasses
gathered along lakes and streams , reeds
in the West and bamboo in the East.
Because these grasses are hollow , they
can hold ink. Some artists today
continue to draw with such instruments ,
which are prepared by cutting the grass
stalks at an angle. The width of the
point determines the thickness of the
mark. A more flexible and finer line is
available from quill pens. Compared to
reed or bamboo pens , they glide almost
effortlessly on paper. A variation in
the pressure applied to the pen will
smoothly change a line's width. Quill
pens have been popular since the
medieval period , when monks used them
to letter manuscripts. They are made
from bird feathers; goose quills are the
most commonly used , but crow, turkey ,
or even seaqull quills make fine pens.

This book was required
for my Introduction to Art course. It
wasn't cheap, but textbooks never are.
I've been pleasantly surprised with the
text. Most textbooks are nearly
impossible to read like a regular book,
this one is an exception. Although I
could easily skim the contents for
course requirements, I find myself
reading every word. The authors have
gone beyond a history lesson and provide
lots of anecdotal information that I
have found very interesting.
The book is very glossy, which makes it
tough to read with light reflection in
the room. However, this makes the
photography very good. Each photo is
clear and easy to view. The call out
sections are well placed and don't
interrupt the reading flow. You can
easily skip over them to finish a page
and return to read the boxes. The only
complaint I have is with the page
references they provide when referring
to other pages in the book. They must
have changed some things around and
never updated these references. You
won't always find the piece of art
referenced on the chapter/page they have
provided.
If you're an art newbie, you'll
definitely learn some things. It
provides a nice overview of art history
and I would recommend it.
